Star Ocean Valor
Feb. 19th, 2019 01:16 pmIn the 22nd Century, as Earth struggled with ongoing climate problems and resource limitations, an astronomical discovery was made. An object, enormous in size, orbiting Alpha Centauri. At first, dismissed as a mere planet, the object soon attracted more and more attention. It was not a planet after all, but a construct of alien origins. At tremendous expense and effort, the UNS Beagle was dispatched to Alpha Centuari on a 50 year mission. It's crew knew they would never return. What they found ensured that millions would follow them. For in Alpha Centauri was a Gateway, a long dormant relic of ancient civilization. In it's shadow, clustered the abandoned ships that had helped build it, and using them, the new arrivals built themselves habitats in orbit of the enormous gateway as they spent the next two generations teasing out it's secrets. In time, the Terrans who made the trip became the Chironites, named for the Chiron Gateway, around which their whole lives spun. And then, a breakthrough was made, and the gate swung open to reveal the shattered realm of Fallen Issthall.
Issthall the great, Issthall the shining, Issthall the One True Civilization. Masters of magic and technology, the Issthallan realm had broken ten thousand years before, and it's people yet squabbled in the dust of their lost realm. Five Great Houses laid claim to the scattered wonders of the lost realm, their ships slowly trundling between stars along ancient hyperlanes, using treasures of ancient technology and magic that are long lost to the degenerate present age. For ten thousand years, alliances and fortunes have shifted, but none are now closer to total victory than when they began.
The discovery that there was a whole human civilization out there came as quite a shock to the Chironites, who had just re-activated a Gateway that lead directly into a warzone between two of the great houses. Just as shocked were the Issthallan descendants, who had never dreamed that a silent Gateway might awaken, and who were forced to grapple with the fact that the Chironites possessed a higher median level of technology. A single Issthallan Mecha might be able to sweep ten Chironite ships away, but that mecha was irreplaceable, the anchor of an entire house's fortunes. After the Expulsion War, the Houses signed a treaty with the Chironites, ceding some disputed territory to them in exchange for peace and trade. Flush with success, the Chiron Republic was formed, and with access to the secrets of the Hyperdrive and the Gateways, they began to explore the galaxy in earnest. One of their earliest discoveries however, was also one of the most puzzling. Terra itself was cut off from the Hyperspace network, unreachable by FTL drive.
Meanwhile, as far from Issthall as Terra, sits a lone forgotten world. Upon this world, hundreds of generations of humans and aliens had been born and died. The survivors of a crashed starship, most have long forgotten their origins from beyond the stars. A small and seemingly insignificant stage, but one that will serve for the first act of a grand drama.
